Art Deco House
Back Garden - before
The Clients had decided to extend their utility room and conservatory and create
an entertaining area in between them.
They have a large back garden to view from this area but it was laid to lawn with
some fruit trees.
I was commissioned to develop the garden and link it with the new building extensions.
I started by getting to know the Clients; their likes and dislikes, their lifestyle
and how their new garden would feature in their lives. How they currently use the
garden, what functions it performs and how they want
to use it in the future.
The house stands on a higher plane than most of the garden which slopes away from
the house.
The changes in level provided an opportunity for a raised terrace for the new entertainment
area and a secluded patio tucked away on a lower level behind the garage.
The overall design of the garden uses dynamic sweeping curves to provide a 'journey'
around the garden and gives easy access to all areas. The new lawn is a perfect
foil for the borders and will provide a play area for the anticipated grandchildren!
The paths are topped with a golden coloured self binding gravel, the raised terraced
area is laid with the same sandstone as the side patio. The steps that access the
garden from the terrace are topped with sandstone and edged in red brick. Powder
coated steel handrails edge the terrace.
Planted beds at the side of the
house use curves to echo
the Art Deco style of the
front of the house. This area
Is block paved with an inset
circle in a contrasting colour.
A shed and wood-shed stand against the fence and the fixing for the
washing line is incorporated in the circle. The main bed here cleverly joins the
change in levels between the raised terrace and the main garden.
