Before ....

The Circular paved area in front of the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich has been purchased by a property developer who will build a retail complex, the Westgate Centre, on the site of the former offices of Ipswich Borough Council.

The Council used to plant these beds with seasonal planting.  These beds are now to be permanently planted.  The site is difficult - a large expanse of paving with most beds being permanently in full sun, no irrigation system, no great depth of soil (the beds are situated over the underground car park) and the whole area is very accessible to the public.

Next to the main entrance of the theatre is an area with table and chairs for people to sit and have a coffee or light lunch from the cafeteria.  There is an area perfect for planting next to this sitting area.  To the side and rear of the Theatre are narrow borders next to pathways.  These borders do not get direct sun so plants that can tolerate dry shade are needed here.

Hebes, Heucheras, small Phormiums, Festuca and horizontal Junipers are amongst the plants that have been used to soften the impact of the concrete yet still let the flow of the curves to prevail.

The side of the seating area near the theatre has been planted with Lavender and Rosemary, there is a striking white barked birch set against the black wall.
